大家好!

回首过往,难说再见;扬帆起航,满含嘱托。此时此刻,我应传递给你们什么样的能量,给你们哪些临行前的嘱咐,让你们在快速的生活节奏里多一份心灵的沉静,在现代化的外表下多一份思想的厚重,在市场化的大潮中多一份内心的坚守,这是我作为校长,作为你们的老师,作为你们的学长,也作为你们的朋友,希望也必须给你们讲的最后一节课。我决定以《论语·子罕》中的一句话,与大家共勉:

“知者不惑,仁者不忧,勇者不惧”。

不惑,源于至知。没有智慧的人生将黯然失色。获得智慧的途径很多,知者不惑的表现形式也很多,关键在于如何选择。现代管理学之父彼得·德鲁克曾说,“二十一世纪是一个选择的世纪,因为未来的历史学家如果回顾今天,他们会记得的,今天最大的改革并不是技术方面或网络方面的革新,而是——人类将拥有选择的权利。”

追溯历史,古往今来,能在岁月的长河中留下足迹的人,无一不是以天下兴亡为己任,以推动人类文明进步为毕生追求。他们坚守内心的崇高追求,点燃昭示理想的火炬,以坚毅的'、顽强的、几乎是前仆后继的精神,传播文明与进步,谱写了一段属于自己人生的完美乐章。

而你们,作为引领社会风气之先的天之骄子,希望大家面对人生的转折和环境的变迁,要选择仰望星空、脚踏实地;面对工作的困难和生活的艰辛,要选择坦然承受、反思超越;面对家庭的琐碎和感情的烦扰,要选择相互体察、彼此包容;面对人情的冷暖和命运的不公,要选择坚守信念、绝不妥协!

但更重要的,是选择将个人命运与国家、民族命运紧紧结合、将个人梦想融入国家梦想、民族梦想,选择“惟理想与信仰不可辜负”,选择“衣沾不足惜,但使愿无违”,让我们“数风流人物,还看今朝”。

这是“至知”的旅程。

至知,而后至仁。“仁”是一种美德,莎士比亚曾说过,“生命苦短,只是美德能将它传到遥远的后世”。“先天下之忧而忧,后天下之乐而乐”提倡的是远大的理想;“心底无私天地宽”提倡的是坦荡的胸怀;“会当凌绝顶,一览众山小”提倡的是宽阔的眼界。

勤俭、善良,是一种“仁”;真诚、礼貌是一种“仁”;包容、厚德,是一种更高层次的“仁”。“惟宽可以容人,惟厚可以载物”,包容、厚德是高贵的品质,是处事的艺术,更是生活的智慧。

高度决定视野,视野决定境界,成大器者,静水流深。如海纳百川,有容乃大;壁立千仞,无欲则刚。一个善意、宽容的举动,往往能带来令人惊喜的蝴蝶效应,让他人受益的同时,我们自身也能从中获得宁静和升华。

这是“至仁”的旅程。

至仁,而后至勇。“害怕,这是我们唯一应当害怕的东西”,惧怕是成功路上的荆棘,而勇敢则是逆境中的光明。“知过之为智,改过之为勇”。勇敢源于自信、源于担当,是“天生我材必有用,千金散尽还复来”的雄心,是“乘风破浪会有时,直挂云帆济沧海”的果敢,是“万里长江横渡、极目楚天舒”的豪情。这种舍我其谁的自信,将会给予你们无限力量!

as everyone knows,english is very important today.it has been used everywhere in the world.it has become the most common language on internet and for international trade. if we can speak english well,we will have more chance to succeed.because more and more people have taken notice of it,the number of the people who go to learn english has increased at a high speed. but for myself,i learn english not only because of its importance and its usefulness,but also because of my love for it.when i learn english, i can feel a different way of thinking which gives me more room to touch the world.

when i read english novels,i can feel the pleasure fr-om the book which is different fr-om reading the translation.when i speak english, i can feel the confident fr-om my words.when i write english,i can see the beauty which is not the same as our chinese... i love english,it gives me a colorful dream.i hope i can travel around the world one day. with my good english, i can make friends with many people fr-om different contries.i can see many places of great intrests.i dream that i can go to london,because it is the birth place of english. i also want to use my good english to introduce our great places to the english spoken people,i hope that they can love our country like us. i know, rome was not built in a day. i believe that after continuous hard study, one day i can speak english very well. if you want to be loved, you should learn to love and be lovable. so i believe as i love english everyday , it will love me too. i am sure that i will realize my dream one day! thank you!

下午好!

今天,我们站在人生的路口,眺望那一片梦想的海洋,回看那一簇艳红欲滴的凤凰花。因为时间已悄悄走到,这毕业的时刻。在纪中的一千零一夜不禁在心底被翻动……

三年前的九月,我们捧着梦想,捧着希冀,捧着青春,选择了在这里播种,我们的高中人生。

汗水曾滋润着,把时光酝酿成拼搏。不能忘记教室里孜孜不倦、乐此不疲地求学。曾经想放弃,因为很苦,因为很累;曾经想逃避,因为很灰心,因为很丧气。只是在看着风雨中挺立的紫荆树,我们明白了,在纪中,拼搏是人生的路。

泪水曾滋润着,把岁月酝酿成感动。不能忘记校运会伙伴的呐喊,不能忘记那用快乐悲伤凝炼成的友情,最不能忘记老师那一丝微笑给我们带来的抚慰。说我们是幸运的一届,那因为有他们一心扑在事业上,那是因为他们愿意为我们作铺路石。三年来,一直没有机会对你们说的一句:谢谢您!

有人说:人的一生分为三天,昨天、今天和明天,昨天的回忆交给纪中保管,今天的机会交给我们把握,明天的希望还在时间的彼岸,只是我相信,有一天当我们在海外时定会期盼一份《纪中人》;当我们年老时必定翻开那尘封的老照片。……

faculty, family, friends, and fellow graduates, good evening.

i am honored to address you tonight. on behalf of the graduating masters and doctoral students of washington university's school of engineering and applied science, i would like to thank all the parents, spouses, families, and friends who encouraged and supported us as we worked towards our graduate degrees. i would especially like to thank my own family, eight members of which are in the audience today. i would also like to thank all of the department secretaries and other engineering school staff members who always seemed to be there when confused graduate students needed help. and finally i would like to thank the washington university faculty members who served as our instructors, mentors, and friends.

as i think back on the seven-and-a-half years i spent at washington university, my mind is filled with memories, happy, sad, frustrating, and even humorous.

tonight i would like to share with you some of the memories that i take with me as i leave washington university.

i take with me the memory of my office on the fourth floor of lopata hall - the room at the end of the hallway that was too hot in summer, too cold in winter, and always too far away fr-om the women's restroom. the window was my office's best feature. were it not for the physics building across the way, it would have afforded me a clear view of the arch. but instead i got a view of the roof of the physics building. i also had a view of one corner of the roof of urbauer hall, which seemed to be a favorite perch for various species of birds who alternately won perching rights for several weeks at a time. and i had a nice view of the physics courtyard, noteworthy as a good place for watching people run their dogs. it's amazing how fascinating these views became the longer i worked on my dissertation. but my favorite view was of a nearby oak tree. from my fourth-floor vantage point i had a rather intimate view of the tree and the various birds and squirrels that inhabit it. occasionally a bird would land on my window sill, which usually had the effect of startling both of us.

i take with me the memory of two young professors who passed away while i was a graduate student. anne johnstone, the only female professor fr-om whom i took a course in the engineering school, and bob durr, a political science professor and a member of my dissertation committee, both lost brave battles with cancer. i remember them fondly.

i take with me the memory of failing the first exam in one of the first engineering courses i took as an undergraduate. i remember thinking the course was just too hard for me and that i would never be able to pass it. so i went to talk to the professor, ready to drop the class. and he told me not to give up, he told me i could succeed in his class. for reasons that seemed completely ludicrous at the time, he said he had faith in me. and after that my grades in the class slowly improved, and i ended the semester with an a on the final exam. i remember how motivational it was to know that someone believed in me.

i take with me memories of the midwestern friendliness that so surprised me when i arrived in st. louis 8 years ago. since moving to new jersey, i am sad to say, nobody has asked me where i went to high school.

i take with me the memory of the short-lived computer science graduate student social committee lunches. the idea was that groups of cs grad students were supposed to take turns cooking a monthly lunch. but after one grad student prepared a pot of chicken that poisoned almost the entire cs grad student population and one unlucky faculty member in one fell swoop, there wasn't much enthusiasm for having more lunches.

i take with me the memory of a more successful graduate student effort, the establishment of the association of graduate engineering students, known as ages. started by a handful of engineering graduate students because we needed a way to elect representatives to a campus-wide graduate student government, ages soon grew into an organization that now sponsors a wide variety of activities and has been instrumental in addressing a number of engineering graduate student concerns.

i take with me the memory of an engineering and policy department that once had flourishing programs for full-time undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students.

i take with me memories of the 1992 u.s. presidential debate. eager to get involved in all the excitement i volunteered to help wherever needed. i remember spending several days in the makeshift debate hq giving out-of-town reporters directions to the athletic complex. i remember being thrilled to get assigned the job of collecting film fr-om the photographers in the debate hall during the debate. and i remember the disappointment of drawing the shortest straw among the student volunteers and being the one who had to take the film out of the debate hall and down to the dark room five minutes into the debate - with no chance to re-enter the debate hall after i left.

未来路,志存高远。几年前,曾读到一个很经典的小故事。大卫安德森和吉姆墨菲一起到铁路公司工作,20年后,吉姆成了公司总裁,而大卫仍然是普通工人。同事好奇地问其中的原委,大卫感慨地说:“二十多年前,我只为每小时1.75美元的薪水而工作,而吉姆墨菲却一直为这条铁路而工作。故事很小,却耐人寻味,因为这样的故事可能随时发生在我们身边。作为一个学生,如果只为分数而学习,最多能够得到好的分数;但如果为知识、为未来而学,那你会得到更多的知识和感悟,并会得到更好的分数。作为一个公务员,如果只为晋身而奔波,或许会得到渴望的职位;但如果为造福一方而倾力,则还将收获信任与尊重。事实上,人生的真正赢家总是那些胸怀远大,不断追寻生命真谛的人,他们能够不断超越自我,保持良好的心态,享受其中的乐趣。我希望你们记住:充分利己,最多只能算是谋生,利他奉献,才能成就事业与人生。

未来路,合作分享。过去的几年中,你们学习了很多专业知识和本领;走出校门,你们将面对更多新的`挑战,学会合作,学会宽容,与人为善,结伴同行,你们的人生将更加多彩。普林斯顿大学曾做过一项分析,发现在成功的因素中,专业能力、知识和经验只占1/4,而良好的合作和与人为善的精神将更有助于成功。科学史上有一个经典故事。上世纪五十年代,两个机构都在进行dna结构的研究:一个是剑桥大学卡文迪许实验室的沃森和克里克,另一个是加州理工的鲍林。鲍林教授是著名的化学和晶体学家,曾两次获诺贝尔奖,他对化学键有深刻的理解,从专业知识和对问题的理解上,鲍林是有利的。但双螺旋关键的衍射实验是在伦敦工作的弗兰克林做出的,由于鲍林教授并不了解这些信息,错失了二十世纪一个最伟大的发现。最近一项统计也发现,超过2/3的诺贝尔奖是通过合作研究获得的。实际上,无论你从事何种职业,团队精神、合作共享都是非常重要的。专业本领只是利用你自身的能量,只能提供一种机会,而合作共享将会给你带来无限外在的能量,给予你更多的可能。
